MEC LEHARI INSISTS THAT LEARNER TRANSPORT CHALLENGES SHOULD BE DEALT WITH BEFORE THE END OF THE 201920 FINANCIAL YEAR



The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Honourable Sello Lehari has instructed the Public Transport Directorate to dedicate extra hours in order to process payment of outstanding invoices from learner transport operators.

The Head of Department Ms Botlhale Mofokeng took cue from that and immediately held a meeting with all officials of Scholar Transport unit. HoD Mofokeng urged the directorate to ensure that payments are expedited.

“We are paying all outstanding invoices up to December 2019 and by Sunday, March 22, 2020, we should have paid all invoices up to December. We will pull all stops to make sure that all 169 claims that have been submitted are paid. Before the end of April, the advert for new learner transport tender will be out in line with the Court order”, said HoD Mofokeng.

The Executive Committee (EXCO) has approved the department’s request for more funds to be made available for payments of outstanding invoices and MEC Lehari said that the matter must be prioritised. “Let’s address this matter urgently as i want this problem resolved when school reopened in April”,MEC Lehari requesting senior managers.

As part of further engagement with stakeholders, MEC Lehari met with South African National Small Bus Operators Council (SANSBOC) Executive Committee today, Thursday, 19th March 2020. He had planned to meet with bus operators towards the end of this month but the meeting may be rescheduled due to gathering restrictions imposed as a strategy to manage and combat COVID-19 pandemic.

SANBOC committed to partner with department in order to manage and combat COVID 19. The department is to assist with sanitation materials for all the officials of the department. Meanwhile the department will soon reveal the number of learners using buses on a daily basis as some buses ferry over 100 learners in one bus which is not allowed.
